  1. In the beginning of the 1970s, the average weight of commercialized tusks was around 21 pounds.  Ten years later, that figure had dropped to 4 to 6 pounds in some countries, corresponding to the weight of very young elephants' tusks (7 to 8 years old).  Adult elephants with large tusks are becoming increasingly rare.
